What exactly is Polymer Clay?

I’m going to be honest here–I’m not a scientist, ok? So, this is just the basics. I’ve summarized the information from one of the top polymer clay producers – Sculpey. Polymer clay (PC) is a modeling clay. It is made from polyvinyl chloride or PVC. That’s right, if you buy my jewelry, it is made of the same stuff as some of the pipes in your home. But colorful. In the ‘raw’ state, PC is slightly sticky and very moldable. It doesn’t dry out if exposed to air, though with age it can harden slightly. Once PC is in its final shape, it is cured in a normal oven. I use a toaster oven. The entire process is non-toxic and friendly to both children and pets. Depending on the brand and type, after PC is cured properly, it is hard and durable, but flexible. Some can be brittle and inflexible if thin when cured (I don’t use those in my jewelry.)

Why use Polymer Clay?

Every polymer clay (PC) artist will probably answer this differently, so I can only tell you why I do. I have a few different reasons, but ease of use, color variety and mixability, durability, and variety of techniques are the top for me. I’ve been working with PC for less than a year at the time of writing this, making something new nearly every day. There are so many different techniques out there, just for earrings, that I haven’t come near to trying all of them. Add on that I am wearing my own creations, increasing my self-esteem, and building a business I love, I think it is worth the time spent.

What brands of Polymer Clay do you use?

I prefer Sculpey Premo, Sculpey Effects, Sculpey Liquid, Fimo Soft, Fimo Effects, and Cernit Translucent.

Why should I buy your jewelry?

Because you’ll love it! Buy really, jewelry made from polymer clay is durable and long-lasting. It is lightweight-so much so that I often forget I am wearing it until I am getting ready for bed at night. I strive to only use hypo-allergenic findings in all of my creations. You are bound to find something you will love!

Can you teach me how to do what you do?

I would love to, actually! I’ve never believed in gatekeeping artistic skills. I’m currently working on building my social media platform so I can offer a variety of tutorials on my different techniques. As an artist with ADHD, I’d love to share how I do what I do and stay sane.

Can you do custom orders?

Potentially, yes! It really depends on the order, timing, and my personal life. Reach out via the Contact Me form and we can discuss.

Anything else I should know?

Yes! As with any handmade object, items made from polymer clay WILL have imperfections. The back may have divots where the clay isn’t as shiny as the rest of the back. A small nick in the side of a pendant may appear. A stud post may be placed slightly off-center. I do every step of the creation process by myself, sometimes I make a mistake. I will always do a bit of quality control before posting and sending out any pieces to ensure they are up to the highest of standards. Bend tests are done on every piece, however, to ensure your purchases last as long as possible, I do not recommend bending them yourself!

Wear & Care FAQs

How should I store my Polymer Clay jewelry?

In general, a clean, dry area away from direct sunlight is best. Somewhere like a jewelry box or earring display stand would work wonderfully! Polymer clay creations will scratch, so don’t store them all tossed in with other jewelry. While the findings are high quality, they could still rust, so don’t let them get wet.

Just how durable is this stuff?

This is some pretty darn durable stuff. I have a couple of earrings in my personal collection that are the perfect thickness and size and have been so perfectly cured that I can nearly bend them in half and they won’t break. That being said, I don’t bend them because it just isn’t worth the risk. If you over-flex or bend them too many times, your item could break. If it breaks because you were bending it, I won’t replace it or refund your money. If you take care of your purchase, store it correctly, and don’t beat it up, it should last you many, many years. I have know items made from Polymer Clay to last for decades when cared for.

What happens if my item breaks?

If your item breaks through no fault of your own and within one year of purchase I can either replace with the same, a similar, or custom design (depending on the original item) or I can refund your money. This will depend upon the circumstances of the original purchase and the breakage. If I determine that the item broke due to negligence on your part, I will decline a replacement or refund.

Can I wear my jewelry while swimming/hiking/playing sports?

You can wear your polymer clay jewelry anywhere you would normally wear jewelry. I would say, however, that I don’t recommend wearing polymer clay jewelry while swimming, especially in chlorinated water. The chemicals in the water, and the water itself, could damage the findings while long-term exposure could damage the clay. Hiking and playing sports, I guess that is up to you. I personally wouldn’t like to wear any jewelry while participating in these activities, but others may. I don’t yuck other someone else’s yum. Just be careful as the item could get damaged or lost.
